Rotating Through Innovation with Parent-Volunteers
Last February 10, Grade 1 classrooms turned into lively spaces of discovery, creativity, and collaboration as the learners participated in an engaging, station-based learning. Six parent-volunteers guided the students through three different classrooms that each serves as a unique hands-on station: Read Aloud, Arts and Crafts, and Redesigning Inventions.
The activity investigated the transdisciplinary theme “Where We Are in Place and Time,” focused on the central idea “Inventions change the world.” Through varied and interactive experiences, the learners explored three important inventions: the lightbulb, telephone, and airplane.
In the Read-Aloud Station, parents shared engaging nonfiction stories about Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, and the Wright Brothers, who are the inventors of the light bulb, the telephone, and the airplane, respectively. The students listened attentively, asked questions, and made connections between past innovations and modern life.

At the Arts and Crafts Station, learners brought their understanding to life by creating visual representations of the three inventions. The room was filled with color, imagination, and excitement as students carefully crafted their projects with guidance from parent volunteers.

Meanwhile, the Redesigning Inventions Station invited learners to think like young innovators. Working alongside parents, they imagined creative improvements to the classic inventions, sketching and sharing ideas that reflected curiosity, originality, and problem-solving.

The rotating format kept learners energized and eager for each new activity, making the experience both dynamic and meaningful. More than just a lesson about inventions, the event highlighted the power of collaboration between school and home. It shows that when families and educators work together, learning becomes even more memorable and inspiring for young minds.
